Case Studies:
The Yeatman
Columbia Hospitality International was selected to open a hotel that defines a destination, providing an authentic and memorable sense of place. The Yeatman hotel in Porto is a unique and distinctive landmark in the world of classic luxury hotels. Inspired by Porto's rich heritage, the Yeatman hotel blends the finest Portuguese traditions of hospitality with a uniquely British flair for understated, yet stylish comfort. Timeless elegance and a wealth of authentic detail create a very special atmosphere which evokes the distinctive personality of this ancient city and its historic link to the world of wine. Occupying a commanding hillside position on the south bank of the River Douro, every room at The Yeatman hotel enjoys breathtaking, panoramic views over the historic centre of Porto.
The Challenge
Timing; with only 5 months until the hotel was scheduled to open, Columbia was consulted to provide strategic project management oversight through multiple stages of the final construction phase. Given the increasingly tight project timeline, we were also tasked with managing Portuguese sub-contractors and vendors to ensure the project was completed on time. In addition, all pre-opening services were to be provided by Columbia Hospitality International, guaranteeing the implementation of the owner's vision and 5-star luxury compliance.
The Process
Through tapping into our global network, we were able to collaborate with the CEO of the Fladgate Partnership, who provided support and analysis of sub-contractor services as well as vendor enhancements and recommendations on challenge areas. Columbia then implemented a set of strategic processes to ensure the project would finish on time, while upholding the highest standards of construction build quality. By supplying an experienced General Project Manager on the ground, we were fully integrated into the property and able to track daily progress with ease. To provide the necessary support of the hotel opening, Columbia provided an International Task Force of seasoned professionals to ensure every aspect of the opening would be flawlessly executed, while providing continual support and training for locally based team members.
The Results
Columbia Hospitality International fulfilled the desired vision and exceeded the owner's expectations, so much so that government officials used the property as a template for other projects in the region. The hotel opening included the President of Portugal as the guest of honor given the projects designation as a Project of National importance. The Yeatman has since won numerous awards, including a Michelin Star for its restaurant, best wine list in Portugal, and Relais & Châteaux status.
